What the test measures

Download: how fast you receive data. It matters for streaming, browsing and downloads.

Upload: how fast you send data. It matters for video calls, cloud backups and working from home.

Ping (latency): the response time in milliseconds. Lower is better for gaming and video calls.

For an accurate result

Connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable, close other apps and tabs that use the internet, and test at different times of day. Over Wi-Fi, results depend a lot on how far you are from the router.

Frequently asked questions

What speed do I need?

Around 30 Mbps is enough for one person streaming in HD; a busy household with 4K streaming and video calls is better off with 100 Mbps or more. Full fibre lines offer 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps or more.

My speed is lower than advertised: what can I do?

Restart the router, test over Ethernet, then contact your provider. Under Ofcom’s voluntary code, many providers must give you a minimum guaranteed speed and let you leave without penalty if they can’t fix it.
