Work out your Child Benefit and how much of it the High Income Child Benefit Charge takes back.
2026/27 rates: £27.05 a week for the eldest child, £17.90 for each other child. The charge is 1% for every £200 of income above £60,000. Even if the charge cancels the benefit, claiming protects your State Pension through National Insurance credits.
How the charge works
If either parent has adjusted net income above £60,000, the higher earner pays back 1% of the Child Benefit for every £200 above that. At £80,000 the charge equals the whole benefit.
Paying more into a pension reduces adjusted net income, so it can cut or remove the charge.
Frequently asked questions
Should I still claim if I would pay it all back?
Yes, or at least register. The claim gives National Insurance credits to a parent who isn’t working, protecting their State Pension, and gets your child a National Insurance number automatically. You can choose not to receive the payments.
