Is 100Mb broadband fast enough for your home?
Is 100Mb broadband enough for your home? See how far this speed goes in everyday use, who it suits, and what faster UK broadband packages cost.
Is 100Mb broadband fast or slow?
Whether 100Mb broadband is fast enough is one of the most common questions people ask when choosing a full fibre package in the UK. The answer depends on how many people live with you and what you all use the connection for.
Many providers now sell faster packages alongside their 100Mb options, often for only a little more each month. If you know what 100Mb can and cannot do, you can avoid paying for speed you don't need without ending up with too little.
What you can (and can't) do with 100Mb broadband
100Mbps gives you about 12.5 megabytes per second of download speed. Don't confuse megabits (Mb) with megabytes (MB). Providers always quote speeds in megabits, and there are eight megabits in one megabyte. Here is how 100Mb copes with everyday tasks:
- Browsing and social media: no problems. Instagram, TikTok, X and ordinary websites load straight away.
- HD streaming: enough for Netflix, BBC iPlayer or other services in Full HD on one or two devices at once. If several screens stream in 4K at the same time, picture quality may drop.
- Video calls: fine for home working on Zoom or Teams from one device. If two people are on video calls at once, you may get some drop-outs.
- Online gaming: latency (ping) matters more than speed. 100Mb is plenty for gaming as long as the connection is stable.
- Large downloads: a 10GB file, such as a game update, takes about 13 minutes. On a 500Mb connection it would take under three minutes.
The top speed usually isn't the problem. What causes trouble is congestion when lots of devices are online at once. Picture a home with three people, each with a phone, a laptop and a smart TV. All those devices share the same 100Mb, and you start to notice the slowdown.
Who is 100Mb broadband enough for?
100Mb can be enough for:
- someone living alone with light use, such as email, social media and the odd series on a streaming service
- a couple who rarely work from home and don't stream in 4K
Busier homes usually do better with a faster package of around 300Mb to 500Mb or more. That means homes where several people work from home, stream in 4K or play games online.
100Mb broadband compared with faster packages
A faster speed doesn't always cost much more. Below are some examples from current UK offers. Prices change often, so check the latest deal before you sign up.
- Below 100Mb: NOW Broadband Fab Fibre (36Mb) from £19/month, which suits light users.
- Around 100–150Mb: TalkTalk Full Fibre 100 from £22/month, Shell Energy Full Fibre 100 from £24.99/month, Virgin Media M125 (132Mb) from £27/month and BT Full Fibre 1 (150Mb) from £29.99/month.
- Around 250–500Mb: Plusnet Full Fibre 500 from £27.99/month, Vodafone 500 from £28/month, Virgin Media M250 (264Mb) from £31/month and Sky Ultrafast Plus (500Mb) from £32/month. Many family homes find this range gives the right mix of speed and price.
- 900Mb and above: EE 900Mbps from £24/month and EE Full Fibre 900 at £39/month. EE also lists a 6Gbps option from £24/month. These speeds make sense for homes with four or more heavy users, or for people who often upload large files.
A 500Mb package can cost only a few pounds a month more than a 100Mb one, but the difference in everyday use can be large. Choose the speed your household actually needs, so you don't pay for spare capacity or put up with a connection that struggles.
What to check besides speed
The advertised speed is only part of the picture. Before you decide, check these points, which adverts don't usually highlight:
- Upload speed: some packages offer fast downloads but much slower uploads. If you work from home or back up files to the cloud, upload speed matters just as much.
- Stability and latency: in daily use, a stable 300Mb connection beats a 900Mb one that has high jitter or keeps dropping out.
- Contract length and price rises: many packages tie you to a minimum term. Some have a lower introductory price or a set annual price rise during the contract. Work out the total cost over the whole contract before you sign.
- Availability at your address: full fibre and cable speeds depend on what is installed in your area, so check which packages you can actually get.
